Litron cup & saucer

1778-1779, Original is housed in the St. Petersburg Hermitage Museum, Russia.

A unique object: this cup is part of one of the most expensive and vast service ever produced by the Sèvres workshops in the XVIIIth century. Requisitioned by Catherine the Great, a passionate collector of cameos and intaglios, the production of this service necessitated the labor of 44 artists and craftsmen over a two-year period, or approximately the entire manpower and output of the factory. Its 744 pieces could set a dinner table for sixty guests.
