MYRTES ET ROSES

Litron cup and saucer

During Louis XVI's reign, the Manufacture de Sèvres gradually turned from painted scenes like those by Boucher to abstract motifs, more in line with the neo-classicism then in vogue as illustrated by this elegant "partridge eye" pattern by the renowned painter Niquet (1777). Foliate myrtle-leaf patterns surrounding roses painted "au naturel" stand out against a ground composed of tiny clusters of blue dots centered on a single crimson dot.
